VAGINITIS

Vaginitis is the term used to describe an infection or inflammation of the vagina. Most women will experience at least one form of vaginitis in their lifetime and symptoms are pretty common among those affected yet many women know little about the condition. Most women think a "yeast infection" is the only form of vaginitis but in reality, it is only one kind of vaginal infection. Several causes exist for vaginitis including different organisms, hormonal changes, allergies, irritations and even certain types of clothing. Because of this, it is important to see a health care practitioner for a correct diagnosis.
An estimated 40% of women with vaginitis do not experience symptoms. For the other 60%, the common symptoms of vaginitis include:

- Itching

- Burning

- Vaginal Discharge

There are three types of vaginitis:

Hormone-related vaginitis - Includes the atrophic vaginitis generally found in postmenopausal or postpartum women as well as women who have had their ovaries surgically removed and prepubescent girls.

Irritant vaginitis - Results from poor hygiene, allergies or tight, non-porous clothing.

Infectious vaginitis - This type is most common women during their reproductive years and is generally caused by trichomonas, gonococci or other sexually transmitted organisms.

A holistic approach to treating vaginitis includes following the regimen outlined below.

Because food intake can contribute to vaginitis, it is important to pay attention to what foods you are taking in when vaginitis flares up.

Avoid wearing tight fitting pants.

Wear cotton panties whenever possible.

Avoid using perfumed soaps, lubricants and spermicides.

Avoid sugar, refined carbohydrates and alcohol.

Some supplements that may be beneficial include:

Lactobacillus Acidophilus (take as directed on label 3 times daily with meals) - Prevents overgrowth of unfriendly bacteria. I recommend using Kyo-Dophilus by Wakunaga, which is a blend of nine Probiotics and provides 3 billion live cells per capsule.

Biotin (300 mcg 3 times daily) - Inhibits yeast.

Essential Fatty Acids (take as directed on label) - Aids in healing.

Garlic (1 capsule 3 times daily) - Nature’s antibiotic, which has antifungal properties. I use Kyolic by Wakunaga, which is a powerful odorless and organic garlic supplement.

Vitamin B Complex (50 - 100 mg 3 times a day with meals) - Replaces deficiency often found in people with vaginitis.

Vitamin E (take as directed on label) - Soothes the mucus membranes of the vagina when applied topically.

Colloidal Silver (take as directed on label) - Natural antibiotic that subdues inflammation & aids healing.

Tea Tree Oil (take as directed on label) - Effective in treating vaginitis when applied topically.

Goldenseal, Echinacea and Barberry (take as directed on label) - Help treat infectious vaginitis by improving immune function.
