SCHIZOPHRENIA

Schizophrenia can be described as a disorder, which can take someone from their grasp on reality and force them into their own worlds. Schizophrenia can make it impossible to know the difference between what is imagined and reality. Hallucinations become common with this type of condition and there are four basic categories of Schizophrenia: Catatonic Schizophrenia, Disorganized Schizophrenia, Paranoid Schizophrenia and Undifferentiated Schizophrenia. Each of these breakdowns of the Schizophrenia disorder has different symptoms and degrees of severity that need to be treated differently.

Some of the symptoms and general characteristics of Schizophrenia include: disordered thinking and speech, diminished curiosity, loss of emotional contact with others, dramatic behavior such as violent outbursts all the way to catatonic moments and depression just to name a few. It can be impossible to realize these symptoms within your own life because of your distorted thinking process but others will be able to identify them in you. The general cause and onset of a disease like Schizophrenia is often attributed to a stressful life event, other than this the causes are still unknown.

There are many different theories related to the cause of Schizophrenia and nutrition is one of them. There is a high indication that Schizophrenia is associated with high copper levels within the body. When you are experiencing high copper levels, the levels of Vitamin C and Zinc tend to drop. When you begin to experience a Zinc deficiency you can experience damage to the pineal area of the brain and this makes you more susceptible to Schizophrenia. From here, seasonal properties have been said to have an affect on how Schizophrenia develops and who is at a greater risk. During the winter months of the year, Zinc intake tends to be lower and this is when more Schizophrenic episodes take place. It should also be noted that a magnesium deficiency has been shown in people with Schizophrenia

There are many natural supplements that have been found to make a difference in controlling the symptoms of Schizophrenia and making sure to keep up Zinc levels to avoid greater risks.

  • Flaxseed oil is used to supply essential fatty acids, which in turn aids in proper brain function and should be taken as directed.
  • According to a Melbourne, Australia based study from the Oxygen Research Center, researchers determined that the omega-3 fatty acids contained in fish oil can aid in the prevention of Schizophrenia.
  • Folic Acid can be taken in dosages of 2,000 mcg daily and a deficiency is present in over 25% of patients listed for Schizophrenia disorders.
  • Vitamin C with bioflavonoids works together with folic acid. Take 5,000 mg daily.
  • Garlic has the ability to increase brain function. Use the brand Kyolic by Wakunaga of America, which is a high quality garlic supplement.
  • Free-Form amino acid complex is required for normal brain function.
  • The herb kava kava is effective at relieving stress and depression.
  • Ginkgo biloba is an herb that has the ability to improve memory and increase circulation.
  • It is recommended to stay away from caffeine and alcohol.

These alternatives can be safely used to improve symptoms associated with this condition. As always, check with a qualified healthcare practitioner prior to starting a new supplement regimen especially if you take prescription medications.
