PROSTATE CANCER

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of death among men today. It is a walnut sized gland located

at the base of the bladder that encircles the urethra. This is the tube where the urine is voided. The prostate

creates prostatic fluid, which is the bulk of the male ejaculate and nourishes the transport of the sperm. Men

in their 30s and 40s are the most susceptible as this is a disease of aging. As you age your risk of prostate

cancer only begins to increase at a faster rate. Approximately 80% of cases occur in men over the age of 65

years old and by the age of 80 years old 80% of all men have prostate cancer to some degree.

If prostate cancer is diagnosed early enough, 99.3% of the men diagnosed survive. Currently the statistics are not that promising with over 29,000 men dying each year due to prostate cancer. Lymphatic vessels leading from the prostate gland to the pelvic lymph provides a route for prostate cancer to spread to other areas of the body, which is how many men lose their life to prostate cancer. Prostate cancer doubles in size every six years and therefore understanding the symptoms is a must. Some of the symptoms include burning sensation during urination, frequent urination, decrease in size and flow of urination, inability to urinate, blood in the urine and lower back and pelvic pain.

Unfortunately this disease does not provide you with these symptoms until the prostate cancer has reached an advanced stage. Also, many times these symptoms may not even be caused by the cancer but instead by an enlarged prostate that may be benign. Although the cause of prostate cancer is not known there are some risk factors that have been established like age, if you have a first relative who died or had prostate cancer, if you are African American, etc. These are the types of higher risk men who will no doubt experience prostate cancer at some point in their lives.

There are dozens of natural ways to avoid prostate cancer in your future and lessen the pain of its symptoms for those who already suffer from prostate cancer.

  • Coenzyme Q10 with Coenzyme A works to support the immune system’s detoxification of dangerous substances and can be taken in 100 mg daily. I recommend the company Jarrow Formulas for Coenzyme products.
  • Colostrum has been shown to boost the immune system, burn fat and calories to create lean muscle and prevent the signs of aging.
  • Garlic can be taken 2 capsules, 3 times a day and enhances your immune function to help break down testosterone. Also, Garlic has been shown to slow the growth of cancer cells. I recommend the brand Kyolic by Wakunaga of America.
  • Proteolytic enzymes should be taken as directed as it can keep down the inflammation and destroy free radicals.
  • Shark Cartilage inhibits the growth of tumors and stimulates your immune function and should be taken as directed for maximum results. It is recommended to take 1 gm per 2 lbs of your weight per day in 3 divided doses. It can be taken orally or through the rectum in a retention enema.
  • Turmeric holds anti-cancer properties as it contains curcumin, which is an antioxidant that has been shown to slow the growth of prostate cancer.
  • It is recommended to have a whole-foods diet containing a lot of whole grains, unpolished brown rice, raw nuts and seeds, wheat, oats, bran and vegetables, such as, broccoli.
  • It is also good get regular physical activity as it can reduce your chances of developing prostate cancer.
  • To help prevent your DNA from mutation which may result in cancer, consume berries.
  • Avoid consumption of red meat.

This is just a small taste of the many different natural remedies and healing alternatives there are available today, which can help you avoid cancer in your future and maintain it for those who already suffer from prostate cancer.

According to a new study published recently in the FASEB journal, antioxidants (polyphenols) that can be found in green tea and red wine produce anti-cancer benefits by acting upon cellular pathways that are necessary for cancer growth.  By causing disruptions in these cellular pathways, scientists are finally aware of how polyphenols help prevent prostate cancer (as well as other types of cancer such as breast cancer and colon cancer).

How polyphenols fight cancer

Polyphenols are able to disrupt the SphK1 / S1P cellular pathway.  This pathway has been identified as necessary for prostate cancer to develop over time.  According to Dr. Gerald Weissmann, the SphK1 / S1P cellular pathway also plays an integral role in the development of other common cancers.

In addition, Weissmann stated that both red wine and green tea are potent super foods because of their potential contribution in cancer prevention.  As a note for the future, Weissmann added that this discovery about polyphenols can help guide researchers who wish to develop more effective cancer treatments.

What about red wine?  Red wine has resveratrol too,which has been studied for several decades now for its heart-healthy benefits.  What else does red wine give its drinkers?  If taken moderately, red wine can help prevent prostate cancer by disrupting tumor development and tissue inflammation.

Red wine's antioxidant content also allows the body's cells to heal themselves from the negative effects of free radicals.  It is said that a serving of red wine per day can reduce a man's chances of developing deadly prostate cancer by as much as fifty percent.

If you don't like drinking red wine, you can still source resveratrol from foods such as nuts and grapes (but the percentage of resveratrol would be much lower).  Resveratrol supplementation can be explored, if you want a healthy dose of the compound everyday in a convenient form that you can take with you easily when you're traveling.

Boosting prostate health

Prostate cancer is considered a 'silent killer' that poses mortal danger to men over the age of 40 – but it doesn't have to be this way.  You can take the steps today to ensure that this cancer is prevented.  There are natural methods to achieve this goal:

1. Drink polyphenol-rich “super foods” like green tea (and red wine too, but don't overdo it!).

2. Eat prostate cancer-fighting foods like broccoli, tomatoes and cauliflower. These vegetables are packed with antioxidants and cancer fight compounds as well.

3. Cancer cells love an acidic body. That's why if your body is generally acidic, cancer cells thrive better.  Raw food (like salad greens) can help stabilize the acid-base balance of your body.

4. Another potent antioxidant is vitamin E.  Vitamin E supplementation (or just taking multivitamins) will ensure that you have enough antioxidants in your body to protect yourself from prostate cancer.  Also, taking multivitamins everyday can help reduce your chances of developing heart diseases, too!

5. Take vitamin D to protect your prostate directly.  In a recent study done in the US, it was found that males that had high levels of vitamin D in their bloodstream were 7 times less likely to suffer mortality from prostate cancer. Vitamin D's contribution to cancer prevention is tied to its ability to enhance the differentiation of cells (cancer cells are often not differentiated), reduce cancer cell growth and slow down the growth of newer blood vessels in tumors.

6. Good news for people who love munching on nuts: walnuts are loaded with compounds that can help slow down the growth of prostate cancer cells. The recommended daily serving of walnuts (and nuts in general) is 2 to 3 oz.

7. Diet may be the reason for up to 1/3 of all cancers; which is why you should pay attention to your diet now to lower your cancer risk.  Prostate cancer specifically, is so prevalent that 1 out of 6 of all males are at risk for developing full blown prostate cancer once in their life.

Eating more fresh fruits and vegetables would certainly help, since these foods are rich in antioxidants and fiber which helps sweep away toxic build-up in the colon.

8. In Europe, the use of African plum tree supplements is pretty popular with males because it helps ease urinary and bladder problems.  It has been reported that this particular supplement may be useful in coping with the various symptoms of an enlarged prostate.

Prostate cancer is detected as a tiny tumor found in the prostate gland of men. It is now considered to be the third most common cause of death for men who are over 75 years of age. Those who are at higher risk include men who work as farmers, painters and other workers highly exposed to cadmium.

Most of these tumors tend to grow at a very slow pace but can cause great harm through the years. Hence, if it is detected early on, prostate cancer can be treated. Men older than 50 years old can prevent this ailment through regular screening in the form of digital rectal examination.

Knowing More about Prostate Cancer

If prostate cancer is still in its early stages, then the symptoms can be too simple and ordinary that you would not suspect anything. Most common symptoms during the early stages of the condition include the following:

  • You feel pain when you are urinating;
  • The feeling of wanting to urinate even if your bladder is already empty;
  • Dribbling of the urine;
  • Blood stains in your urine;
  • Pain felt in your hips and back.

When the disease has already spread out to the rest of the other parts of the body, the symptoms can grow more into the following:

  • Pain in your bones;
  • Weakness due to spinal cord compression;
  • Unexpected weight loss;
  • Failure of kidneys; and
  • Anemia

The primary cause of prostate cancer still remains unknown though most health experts say that it is a combination of various factors like improper diet, hormonal changes, immediate environment and even genetics. Recent studies also revealed that men 55 years and older, and whose diet include foods filled with saturated fat, have increased testosterone levels which could heighten the growth of the prostate.

Majority of those who suffer from this type of cancer often survive and still enjoy years of life ahead of them even after the diagnosis. The hope for a cure can only be less if the cancer was diagnosed late, has already spread out beyond the prostate and it has developed into further complications in the internal organs.

The Importance of Exercise to Lower the Risk

A recent study by the researchers of the Harvard School of Public Health and University of California finds that having sufficient and proper exercise can lower the risk of death in men who suffer from prostate cancer. It is the very first study which evaluated the effects of implementing exercises and other forms of physical activity in men diagnosed with prostate cancer. The study, which can be found in the advance online version of the Journal of Clinical Oncology, suggests that the progression of prostate cancer can be slowed down if regular physical activity would be added to the patient’s everyday lifestyle.

This brings such perfect news for men who have been diagnosed with prostate cancer – especially if they are still wondering as to what to do, and what measures to take, in order to help them fight their battle with cancer. This study was conducted, involving 2,705 male participants for an 18-year period duration. The results showed that men with prostate cancer who walked for a longer time compared to the others had a 46 percent reduced risk of dying from the disease and any other complications brought by it.

Natural Tips to Treat and Prevent Prostate Cancer

The most common form of treatment for prostate cancer is surgery.  However, not everyone has the means to undergo such radical procedure.  The good news is that, there are more natural ways to help in the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer.

Herbs have been used eons ago in the treatment of various types of disease conditions.  As in the case of prostate cancer, herbs such as saw palmetto as well as substances like selenium, zinc and lycopene can also help.

Lycopene. Many studies have shown that one natural and sure way to treat cancer is by eating foods that are rich in lycopene. It significantly help promote prostate growth, and because it is a rich source of antioxidants, it helps fight off cancer-causing free radicals thereby preventing development of prostate cancer. A research published also in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute discovered that men who eat more cooked tomato meals are less likely to have prostate cancer. The cooked tomato products can render more benefits to the body rather than taking them in in their raw form. It is only in the process of cooking that more amounts of lycopene are released when the cell walls of the vegetable break down. Other ideal sources of lycopene aside from tomato include watermelons, pink grapefruits and guavas.

Zinc. It is also recommended to take in lots of foods that contain the mineral Zinc since it helps prevent the enlargement of the prostate. Examples of these would be oysters, sunflower and pumpkin seeds, and the like.

Selenium. This is another essential mineral that protects the prostate gland from damage. It can be taken in as a supplement which you can find in various drug stores in your locality. Foods that are rich in selenium are garlic, grains and chicken.

Saw Palmetto. Another popular natural cure for the prostate gland is the saw palmetto. It is capable of slowing down the DHT development that is the main cause of the development of the disease. If you would have enough consumption of this, you can prevent the gland from becoming larger and more swollen.

Legumes and Soy.  These contain phytoestrogens – chemicals that have the potential of preventing prostate cancer.

Other dietary sources that can possibly cure and prevent prostate cancer include fruits such as oranges, strawberries and grapefruit. Green tea , dark chocolate and milk thistle can also help.

ACUPUNCTURE.

The method of acupuncture is also becoming known to relieve the patient from the pain when cancer has spread out already even way beyond the gland. A statement released in 1997 by the National Institutes of Health shows their support with the implementation of this method to overcome nausea that is a common side effect of chemotherapy. Other forms of massage and physical therapy can also be beneficial to help ease anxiety from the men patients.

In fighting off prostate cancer, it is important that you should bear in mind the importance of living a life that is filled with enough exercise and proper diet. Regardless of any other type of cancer you may have, the secret to having a longer life would be to think positive that you can get well even with the simplest of efforts.
